“the future is bright…”

N-P-K stands for three major minerals; Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. They are often depicted as hyphenated numbers, like “15-30-15,” corresponding to the relative percentage by weight of each major nutrient or, in this case, macro-nutrients. In plants, macro-nutrients are present in large concentrations and are necessary to produce healthy plants. Other important macro-nutrients include sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg). Here is a breakdown of what each mineral does:

Nitrogen-promotes development of new leaves
Phosphorous-aids in root growth and blooming
Potassium-important for disease resistance and aids growth in extreme temperatures
Sulfur-contributes to healthy, dark green color in leaves
Calcium-promotes new root and shoot growth
Magnesium-chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color and absorbs sunlight to make food, contains a Mg ion.
